Genuine, Human, Immersive
Carl is genuine. This is not a set about a sexually frustrated wife at home with two kids having the comic lampoon them in front of strangers for laughs. No, this is Carl who odd as it may seem has a life that is all too comically true. Why embellish when the truth has your audience busting a gut.
Human it is. Carl has a talent for bringing you to the scene that he is illustrating with words. You are there. You feel for the man who has had some pratfalls all too often. Yeah you laugh at his misfortune but you cheer for his drive to overcome. He can laugh at himself and he is ok with you joining in. I was already long familiar with Carl as an excellent journalist with a knack for weaving a narrative, and possessed of an incisive and self-effacing wit, so it only made sense he'd also be an accomplished performing humorist. This was my first experience of him in that role. I wasn't disappointed, beholding him string together real life anecdotes into a bizarre, unexpected storyline that kept me laughing and hanging on. I thought the show was pretty hilarious in the second half of the performance. The first half was a bit boring but the comedian redeemed himself in the second half. This performance was a bit of storytelling and comedy, unique performance....
