My overall impression

“Tattered Capes” was thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. With a complex and witty script that can be enjoyed as a largely light-hearted pastiche of familiar superhero stories and their big-screen interpretations, this tale takes some unexpected turns into meditations on love, honesty, and the need for acceptance. the audience is treated to several exciting action sequences and intensely emotional moments along the way.

The author, director, and cast seem fully aware of the genre’s inherent absurdity and tendency toward the extreme without ever condescending to it or losing sight of its power to convey meaningful truths about the real world. There is plenty of humor and gentle mocking of tropes, but no breaking of character or winking at the audience.

The already considerable dramatic and physical skills of the lead performers are enhanced by a black-clad, mostly speechless chorus who help them to rise above the abilities of mere mortals to pull of astounding feats of stage combat and displays of power. These “shadows” may be the true heroes.
