I have known Justin for some time but didn’t know much of his history, but it turns out we have had some similar experiences discovering punk rock in very small and isolated parts of the country. I knew what being one of the few punk rockers in high school was like, all too well. Justin covered a lot of ground in Falling on Deaf Eyes and without focusing on one specific aspect, he was able to make his mother’s inability to hear part of the whole picture than a single issue. His ability to learn ASL and communicate in a way with his mother was great. Even though she couldn’t hear, she knew when the music was being played loud. I loved this, it was hilarious. While the play isn’t long, the character development was rich.
What I didn't like
The space is somewhat challenging, in a way. Perhaps moving the scenes set on the far edges of the stage a little more to the center so those seated on the far sides against the wall have a better sightline.
My overall impression
Falling on Deaf Eyes is heartwarming and touching as it is funny and inspiring.
