What I liked

What’s not to like? It’s the 80s.

What I didn't like

The 80s were perfect.

My overall impression

There’s a tiny patch of Hollywood currently stuck in the 1980s and if you love demon dogs, shadow monsters, teen romances and, yes…. The Music, then this is the place to be. Stranger Things the Musical delightfully pokes fun at the Duffer Brothers 1980s homage through a playful use of 80s pop music nods and Speilbergian movie tropes. Lee Huff’s music is spot on with references from Cindi Lauper to “Footloose” and Angela Todaro’s staging is peppered with just the right classic 80s dance moves to keep the cast and audience on its feet. The cast is a big part of the fun. They throw themselves into the material with an infectious glee.

Seeing “Stranger Things” on TV is not a prerequisite. Those who know and love the show get all the jokes but it’s almost more enjoyable trying to figure out what’s going on. If you’ve seen “Goonies” or any other 80s kids horror flick, you’ll be able to follow along.

Oh, and one cannot do an 80s homage without hair. And there are plenty of hair moments, enough to make one wonder how on earth we ever survived the era.

Go see Stranger Things the Musical then blast all your 80s faves in the car as you head home for that Barttles and James cooler you’ve still got hidden in the back of your fridge.
