What I didn't like
I’m sorry… maybe the other reviewers saw a different RUBY, but this was not the show I thought I was going to see! A 70’s musical better have some BUMP, HUSTLE and a whole lot of EARTH, WIND & FIRE…. none of these elements were there! The songs sounded like watered down Disney movie tunes. The script lightly brushes upon the Wizard of Oz with no commitment to the iconic characters, except for a version of a good witch… that sounded like a character from The Wiz, but never had the musical support to use that strong voice and bravado that is inside that actor! She needed a “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News!” number because that woman could deliver it! You could tell!! I know it is Fringe and I know everyone wants to avoid a big cast, but this story needed more characters and ballsy songs to take Ruby from virginal white to sexy fishnets! If you’re going to trip down the Yellow Brick Road with a seventies back beat and the corruption of the pure and innocent, then we need that bawdy, sexy flavor and this show never brought it. The voices were nice and the dancing was fun, but bring the sexy A-Game! AND, lose the Rocky Horror knock off lips and the first number… it’s just telegraphing what we’re about to see! Go right into the story and try to remember it’s a big deal to de-flower an innocent, scared girl that doesn’t want to go all the way and turn her into a stripper, shoe wearing, party girl, but it needs the songs and good script to do it!
My overall impression
Nice attempt, but misses the mark. Extremely talented cast, but weak story, average songs. I really wanted to like it, but… the show never got me there.
