My overall impression
6/25 Worth SRO! A blender full of various theatrical styles that sounds horrible together but tastes delicious!
- A live original Rock & Roll music score? check
- Operatic/punk rock vocals by a gifted and versatile singer that serves as Greek chorus? check
- Jaw droppingly sexy acrobatic/dancers in masks? check
Amazing! My mouth was agape in awe on so many levels – a few minor tweaks and this show (already deserving of an extended run) should move to a bigger house for an open run in Vegas or Off Broadway!
My problem with the show is the relentless amazing work. I know, sounds crazy, but the show would benefit with a few more quiet moments to make us appreciate the next big number – “too much good stuff” as it were. The “book” for this musical morality play also needs to clarify the story elements earlier – but in something spectacular looking like this, it takes a back seat to the dancing.
The minimal sets and colorful lighting were very effective accept for a clunky and ugly ‘hanging tree" – better to have a tree silhouette created by those talented dancers’ limbs projected onto the free standing curtain used earlier in the scene – I bet they could do it with a handheld light.
Costumes were deceptively simple and effective – but the commedia style masks were mostly muddy blobs that weren’t sharp or extreme enough to clearly create a character (except for the Chicken man and the horned demons worn by the band) – and sometimes they got in the way of the dancers movements.
I will be on the lookout for their next production. I’m now a fan!
