Miss Julie is a fun, surreal romp through the collective unconscious of modernist theater. Plus, it's a friendly length, and the venue has Miss Julie themed cocktails on offer. We were really glad we made it out for The Miss Julie Dream Project @ Hollywood Fringe. First time at this fringe fest, and we loved the venue (3 Clubs) and the play. Living in SF and NYC I volunteered, worked, and otherwise frequented the fringe fests there, and it's always a mixed bag -- with a few shining gems that really bring a strong, unique vision and push the form. We really appreciated the innovative, but strangely/certainly disciplined approach the writers took to exploring Strindberg's two plays, and the absolute commitment from the actors. It was fresh, challenging, surprising -- totally liberated as a work. With so many collaborating writers, it was also impressively (ultimately) cohesive. The conceit of the play is so fiendishly clever that there isn't anywhere the narrative can take you that isn't justified. The great news is that the story is reigned in and tempered by the writers in such a way that you're never completely lost, yet the incredibly talented cast has all the room in the world to soar. I did not know the plays of record, but the exposition is carefully meted out so that it doesn't affect one's ability in the least to enjoy the intricacies of the character's predicaments. When the show ended, it was as though I awoke from a dream myself. A seamless collaboration of the work of actually several playwrights, all based on the work of one, The Miss Julie Dream Project is masterfully assembled into an undulating, interwoven, yet cohesive work of dreamlike fantasy, paranoia, struggle, fate, and sex. The production makes great use of the small space and the actors' performances are very strong. A fun and sometimes funny trip, when reality and truth and people transform before your eyes, morphing from the known to the unknown and back.... full review

There are some shows where you show up not knowing what to expect, you sit down, strap in and get ready to go on a ride. That's exactly what happened here. I sincerely enjoyed this show. The clever concept, of a suddenly self-aware literary character desperately trying to escape their pre-written destiny, experienced in a series of dreams they fall through is both interesting and creative. I'm fascinated not only by this piece, but by the process it was developed. I hope to see more explorations from Fell Swoop in the near future. ... full review
