MAX & ELSA: NO MUSIC. NO CHILDREN.

ben moroski · June 15, 2015 certified reviewer
Yes yes yes yes yes. "Max and Elsa" is sold out for a reason -- many reasons. Chief of which is that it just simply rocks. Four actors operating at the top of their comedy game. A polished and breathless piece of theatre. This is the kind of show that makes Fringe great. Of the same stylistic ilk as last year's "Women" (but with more dramatic and thematic meat on the bone), this flip-side send up of "The Sound of Music" is a MUST-SEE. Keep your eyes peeled for when/if they add shows during Fringe... full review

Treya's Last Dance

A true hidden gem of this year's Fringe. I'm so pleased I took the time to walk the extra block to Hudson Backstage to get a chance to see Shyam at work. Hilarious and heartbreaking by turns, this show is messy and beautiful and a knockout showcase for the brilliant comedic (and dramatic) talents of Shyam Bhatt. Do yourself a favor and see this show during Fringe!... full review

NELL GWYNNE: A DRAMATICK ESSAYE ON ACTING AND PROSTITUTION

Bella Merlin just broke the theatre. A vivid, energizing, vital romp through an oft-forgotten corner of stage history. A refreshing take on the biographical solo play about a theatre artist (which seems to be a genre in itself), Bella brings Nell to life and I would have spent another 45 minutes with her just to hear more of her stories. The play and performance are a gift to the Fringe and should most definitely be seen.... full review

Two impressive and luminous performances. Definitely a must-see dramatic offering at Fringe this year. Grounded and moving, this was a great way to start off my 2015 Fringe experience. ... full review

From a Yardie to a Yankee

Sardia is electric. What a show. So glad I was able to see it. Her story is incredible and the way she chooses to tell it is equally captivating. She has the audience in the palm of her hand. She is an extremely gifted performer and writer -- a stage presence so thrilling you can't help but want to listen. ... full review

Bonnie's Future Sisters

A hidden gem. I've been to a lot at the festival this year and this is one of the best shows I've seen. I went to "Bonnie's Future Sisters" on a whim and was more than pleasantly surprised. Crisp, funny writing, strong, specific acting all the way around, polished technical elements -- I just can't say enough. A true breath of fresh air. This is a show that knows what it is, makes no apologies and capitalizes on its potential at nearly every turn. Breezy, fun, grounded, witty, wise, and just a re... full review

CAN'T TAKE MY (EYES) OFF OF YOU

ben moroski · June 25, 2014 certified reviewer
A moody, fractured relationship piece anchored by Fiona Lakeland's luminous stage presence, "Can't Take My (Eyes) Off Of You" is more a series of impressions than a linear story. The technical elements in the transitions are deftly handled and lend a lovely, haunting quality to the play. The transitions inform the action rather than distract from it. A softly impressionistic sweep of a play punctuated and guided by Lakeland's performance.... full review

Shame Based Fun

Sasha is a joy to watch on stage. She's a live wire. This is a hilarious, messy, wonderful piece that makes you think about things that should be thought about -- and talked about! -- but are all too often deemed...ahem...too shameful to address. Kudos to Sasha. This shit is brave. Keep going there! I had a blast!... full review

And She Bakes, LIVE.

A pure pleasure. I'm so glad I had a chance to see the Bakeress do her good work. "And She Bakes, Live" elevates self-deprecation and self-effacement to an art form. It's a dangerous line to walk, but she includes us on her journey with her incredibly sweet, endearing personality. But it's what is brewing just below the surface of her sugary exterior that really lends the show weight and power. One of the best solo shows at the Fringe. ... full review

Crazy, zany fun once again for Michael Shaw Fisher and the wild souls of Orgasmico. Definitely check this one out. Twisted and fun, boiling over with energy and wit, this is a romp you don't want to miss.... full review
