BlackBalled

gordon meacham · June 17, 2018 certified reviewer
I usually love historical dramas, and Blackballed is just what I wanted to see after learning about it at a Fringe Office Hours. Blackballed was the kind of slow burn that I love to watch on TV and stage. So much of theatre experiments with plot, costume, staging, etc., and sometimes all you need to tell a compelling story is the verisimillitude and dialogue that Blackballed delivered so well.... full review

MACKERS!

I just finished a run of Macbeth (the second in my acting career) and what fun it was to see everything that challenged or confused me in the text lambasted on stage. This show was exceptionally funny. I wish I could remember specific jokes to quote in this review, but they were TOO. LEGION. Comedic timing was impeccable every step of the way and I could not tell what was improvised or scripted. I was pleasantly surprised to see so much respect for the audience acknowledgement of Brecht used ... full review

A Very DIE HARD Christmas

I am a die-hard Die Hard fan, and this is the only good thing to happen to the IP after the initial movie. I suppose the second one is pretty good, but honestly, it's a far cry from the first. Anyway, this show is exactly as fun as you'd expect from the title and tagline. The cast keeps the energy insanely high, the jokes keep coming and they keep landing. The music is inspired, funny, and has really simple, tight choreography that keeps the story moving. Props are excellent and the full-size ... full review

My Big Fat Blonde Musical

I generally balk at one-person shows, especially autobiographical ones. This is not a solo show to balk at, though. Not many people can hold my interest in a solo show like John Leguizamo or Laurence Fishbourne can, but Theresa's high energy--without being insufferably bubbly--kept me interested the whole time. Great comedic moments, fun songs, relatable story, and it does not overstay its welcome. I love to watch theatre in under an hour.... full review

Happy Hour

gordon meacham · June 12, 2016 certified reviewer
Happy Hour had some really stellar performances and compelling musical interludes. While the plot needed a little ironing out, the actors gave each character the depth and honesty only given by committed artists. I really, really enjoyed the voyeurism of the whole thing and seeing a mirror of the Los Angeles acting community. The play made no apologies for the hypothesis that "no, you probably won't make it as a famous artist," and I enjoyed that brutal honesty. I would not, however, recommend dr... full review

A Feast of Snacks

If a mini musical about the ethics of competitive 'short-form golf' doesn't make you laugh, you're a vegetable. If you're a vegetable, you'd fit right in at Feast of Snacks.... full review

The Video Games

gordon meacham · June 27, 2015 certified reviewer
This is the show to which you go tipsy and have a great time. If you're a seasoned gamer, you'll enjoy the homework that the cast and direction have done to make this a love letter to 20-somethings who grew up with a gamepad in their grubby hands. I saw Megaman assume his "taking damage frame" from the original game and Donkey Kong use his down+B ground pound from Super Smash Bros. Melee. There are probably more easter eggs in the choreography but I was too busy trying to frantically vote for my ... full review

Inside The Mind Of Me

gordon meacham · June 26, 2015 uncertified reviewer
As a former student of drama at a university, I'm used to people in crazy costumes rolling on stage from the audience and then crying softly into my hands as I realize this is where my tuition went. Inside the Mind of Me is nothing like that. It tells its story in sliced up remembrances and I understood every moment. I would go see it if I were you. It's funny and sexy and sad and fucked up and everything I look for when I watch a show about a guy in a coma with a clown-devil and an Egyptian ange... full review

I laughed, I cried, I touched myself. It was a lovely evening for everyone involved except for the older couple sitting next to me. 5/5 would eat out again.... full review

The Best of Albuquerque Fringe 2025

gordon meacham · June 17, 2015 certified reviewer
It's really funny. The acts take a little while to get going, but once you get into the drollness of the piece, it really takes off. If you're tired of common topics and concepts for small and/or avant-garde theatre and the personalities that roll with that, then Albuqueef Fronge 2025 is the show you gotta see. The Belgian joke show is ... sublime. Make sure you don't eat the chocolate they give you at the ticket booth. Trust me. You get an opportunity to do so much more with it, that is, assu... full review
