Typically, when I think of "Shakespeare adaptations", I cringe. Productions either do too much or too little and never find that sweet spot, the middle ground. "Laertes Loves Hamlet Loves Ophelia" isn't so much an adaptation as a re-imagining of the play's three young protagonists, placing them in an apartment together as they sort out the drama surrounding the recent death of Hamlet's father and his accusations of murder most foul. ... full review

What a delightful surprise! Most parody musicals I've seen have strayed too far from the general conceit, but not here. This is, essentially, a full season of "The Bachelor" crammed into 75-minutes of song and dance madness. NICKEL DICKERS is an over-the-top, raunchy, high-spirited send-up of Old Hollywood mentalities that lampoons much about current industry trends. The show exists somewhere between past and present, and once you latch on to that, it's easy to enjoy the ride. AMERICAN CONSPIRACY takes a story most of us know and expounds upon it and subverts it in engaging and unexpected ways. The assassination attempt is the backdrop, but this is really the story of disparate characters that feel trapped by 'something', desperately looking for ways out. It's a feeling we can all relate to, and writer Benjamin Schwartz deftly blends the comedy and drama in ways that take a simple tale and turn it into something truly complex. ... full review

I went into this with limited expectations. Firstly, I am NOT a Chekhov fan. I don't doubt his genius, but his writing has never made much of an impact on me. Secondly, I am NOT a Kardashian fan in any way, shape, or form. So, as I sauntered into the McCadden Theatre at 11:45pm for a midnight performance of a show that combined the two, I did so with the knowledge that I might be setting myself up for disappointment. What makes "Generation Me" work is the energy and urgency with which the cast conveys the material. I mean - it's not like we necessarily needed another play or musical about suicide in high school. After "Bare: A Pop Opera" and "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead" (both of which are borrowed from in this piece), the ground seems to have been covered.
