Supposedly inspired by Anton Chekhov's tragedy "Ivanov" this updated version is more Tennessee Williams than Chekhov. The actors were fine within this new context but the culture and prejudices of Czarist Russia do not translate to sunny California of today. The theme of "Nicky" suggests a man in torment over his finances and his sexuality and that is a totally new play. ...

Here are 6 plays that show how differently creative people come up with stories. The task was to write a 10 minute play with a box as focus and they range from poignant to acidic to camp, so there is something for everyone. By using four superbly versatile actors, there was a nice balance to each playlet that enabled the performer to strut their stuff. Holding it all together is guitarist Brian Katz. Director Dan Berkowitz demonstrates how seemingly simple plays can be brightened up with imaginati...

Everything actor Ernest Kearney chooses to speak to us, through the actual words of Robert Ingersoll, resonates today! Hey, Kearney might just have brought this guy Ingersoll back from the 19th Century in a space ship because here he is, in person, talking about the encroachment of religion on politics and pretty soon the ending of the democratic dream! Go if you dare and tremble because it is not an old philosopher but a passionate advocate for freedom and justice and, yes, compassion on that st...

Honest and moving. In this day of shock theater its daring to write an honest relationship play and Terry Ray has done it. He captures the confusion, self-loathing, emotional baggage and tenderness between two men in love. With no simple answers he shows different sides of masculinity with one man tender and shy the other bawdy and confrontational. Together they show as opposites but at a deeper level there is a need for caring that draws them back year after year in spite of their own bewilderme...

Its a love story between a young wanna-be writer and a sweet-natured waitress, set at the hotel where famous journalistic wits gathered to dine publicly in the 1920's. I expected to witness the brilliant repartee of that famous celebrated group of New York City writers, critics, actors, and wits who dined and sparkled at the Algonquin. Sadly, they were depicted as a mean-spirited group who were deliberately cruel to a naive out-of-towner with literary aspirations. ...

This now almost classical play about teenage homophobia and bullying is handled with dramatic force by this admirable young company. This is my first time seeing it and I was amazed, moved, and angered by the awesome truth it reveals in our society. There was hurt dignity in James Sanger's Beethoven, honest confusion in Chandler David's CB, and terrifying anger and pain in Gabriel Nunag's Matt. Joey Maya Safchik was delightful as CB's wacky sister, Judy Durkin and Charlotte Weinman were wicked fu...
