PLAY ON! A Musical Romp with Shakespeare's Heroines

james ferrero · June 13, 2018 certified reviewer
Such a lovely piece. The songs were very original, ranging from comedic to dramatic in a seamless fashion. Laura Jo Trexler embues such a passion in each song, and isn’t afraid to get performative with each one. One of the more original Fringe pieces I’ve seen, I can’t recommend it highly enough.... full review

Emergency Operation

It's not everyday you see a romantic comedy done onstage. Emergency Operation is a loving nod to those classic rom coms you know, but with an added theatrical suspension of disbelief. Utilizing magical realism ala John Cariani's Almost Maine, we see a man undergo a heart procedure following a breakup with his girlfriend. But much like the heart, this is far more complex than it first appears. You can take away the memories and the pain, but the risk of remembering never goes away. Jess Moore and ... full review

Chimpskin

Chimpskin takes the concept of physical theatre and stretches it into a fully realized, emotional story. The physicality of the actors is beautiful, as is their versatility when switching characters. Damla Coskun's embodiment of the chimp is spot on, from the way she carries herself to what she does with her facial reactions. The piece moves smoothly and doesn't drag at all over the hour run time. Nathan Nonhof provides fascinating, eerie didgeridoo accompaniment which adds a much more in the mom... full review

PSYCHOSICAL: an asylum cabaret

james ferrero · June 18, 2017 certified reviewer
Psychosical takes the concept of the jukebox musical and infuses it with a high amount of energy and passion. Rather than just choosing random songs for laughs, all of the humor is earned with the characters on stage. For them, there's nothing funny about their situation. So we laugh, and then are moved by the slower moments. Funny, thought-provoking, and a blast to listen to, don't miss this one.... full review

Nicaea

james ferrero · June 11, 2017 certified reviewer
Nicaea holds nothing back as a religion-infused political thriller. You'd think a bunch of people debating religion could get monotonous, but new thoughts and ideas constantly spring up that make you question even your own beliefs. There was always a danger in the air, which is exactly how it must have felt at that time. Every actor inhabits their role naturally, and everyone truly believes what they're saying. It's what makes the arguments so compelling. It's especially relevant these days, chec... full review

Quantum Entanglement

james ferrero · June 11, 2017 certified reviewer
Quantum Entanglement pokes fun at it's title, as in "What does that even mean?" A science play? Kind of. What looks like a story astronomy-driven father and his daughter turns out to actually be more focused on her relationship with her mother. And it is a very real relationship. Hard to read, sometimes harsh, but ultimately loving. The earnestness of the father's character and the distant nature of the mother combine for Katelyn Schiller's fascinating daughter. She is raw, vulnerable, sweet, hea... full review

SPACE or The Number of Nothing

james ferrero · June 05, 2017 certified reviewer
Space, or the Number of Nothing is not your typical play about space. At first, you think it's going to follow the 2001 path of A.I. gone rogue. What it becomes is much more of a soul search for these characters. Watching how they deal with the pressures, loneliness, and the unknown of interstellar travel was an unexpected, but terrific surprise. The actors all conveyed the struggle differently and realistically. The use of media in this show is some of the finest I've seen in not only any Fringe... full review
