Life During Wartime and Beyond
Former IDF member explores her many identities in a new play at the Complex Theater.

HOLLYWOOD, CA – Maude Klochendler, an actress and former IDF (Israeli Defense Force) war room operator, brings a unique post-feminist perspective to the issue of Jewish identity in a new play at the Complex Theater, 6476 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood CA, as a part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Rollerblading in Gaza was written by Brian J. Borkowski in collaboration with Ms. Klochendler. After a successful preview in New York City, the production moves to Hollywood and features the directing debut of Kyle Wood. The show will run from June 16th through June 25th.

Rollerblading in Gaza offers a new perspective on the role of women in combat situations, and the life they create after leaving the service. Writer Brian J. Borkowski explains, “With Rollerblading in Gaza, we tried to emphasize the importance and the unique situation of those who support the men on the front lines. We also explore Maude’s need to reconcile her military identity with her civilian life as a young actress.” One New York audience member, a current IDF combatant, felt that the play, “made me think about my own experience differently.” In a series of vignettes, the show moves from continent to continent, bringing the tension between Israeli pride and American dreams. “[Rollerblading in Gaza] expressed exactly my thoughts as a woman and as a global citizen, said an audience member, after viewing the production.

In addition to providing a unique insight into Jewish and Israeli culture, the show is also a high energy affair that merges musical theater and cinematic elements. Maude’s training as a singer, dancer, and actress is featured prominently in the show. “When I joined the team,” said director Kyle Wood, “it was because I was looking forward to letting Maude loose onstage and seeing what she could do. I was also looking forward to an exciting challenge for my first time as a director.” One of the main challenges that Mr. Wood faces is the play’s inclusion of projected animations which feature stylized backdrops and the silhouettes of individuals from Ms. Klochendler’s past. As she tells her story she interacts with the shadows, and through them, builds an identity that she defines on her own terms.

Rollerblading in Gaza will be shown at the Complex in the Dorie Theater and is a participant of the Hollywood Fringe Festival. The Hollywood Fringe was created in 2005 as a way to produce new and provocative works for the benefit of the community. Tickets will be $10 and can be purchased online through the Hollywood Fringe [www.hollywoodfringe.com] or on the official Rollerblading in Gaza website, www.rollerbladingingaza.com.
