After experiencing a racist college professor who devalued the work of black artists and writers, Joyce Lee recognized that the ills that BIPOC students face throughout their education is connected to structural policies set in school systems. Repercussions of systemic racism in education are revealed in the play. The effects harm not only the black mother and her son but also the Latinx school administrator who has no power to fight the deep-seated system. The play is timely, as it explores how institutions are inherently racist; aligning with Critical Race Theory which holds that racism is embedded in public policy.
