‘UNAPOLOGETICALLY BLACK ‘ AT THE FRINGE!!!

“Unapologetically Black”
Hollywood, CA

Misty Monroe won the Hollywood Fringe Diversity Scholarship for her solo show “Unapologetically Black”. It was created by Misty Monroe and directed by the incredibly gifted Karen Maruyama.

“Unapologetically Black” is a comedic story about how Misty grew up with awesome white friends and a beautiful black family. Her struggle came when she felt pressured to hide her love for Madonna from her Black friends and her white friends didn’t think she was “really” black. Misty was constantly apologizing and hiding whom she was to fit in. When she learned about the Stages of Nigrescence in college it finally gave her the confidence to be unapologetic.

Misty wrote this show because she is passionate about bringing cultures together. She realized through a variety of tragedies and challenges in her life that we are all more alike than we are different. The themes expressed in the show are universal and with unflinching vulnerability, Misty shares the importance of being unique without alienating anyone.

Misty Monroe is a Groundlings Sunday Company Alumna and has performed “Unapologetically Black” to sold out crowds at the Groundlings Theater. She has appeared on numerous T.V. shows including “Baskets”, “2 Broke Girls”, and recently Bosch. Misty has also tested for SNL multiple times.

Karen Maruyama is a former main company Groundlings Member. She is an accomplished actress with a long list of credits in both T.V. and film. She is currently directing numerous shows at the Groundlings Theater.

“Unapologetically Black” will take place at the Asylum Theater Studio C located at 6448 Santa Monica Blvd
