Johanna Super Happy Bedtime Revue: A Traumedy

Artist Johanna Buccola makes her L.A. debut with a unique solo show that blends dance, music, improv, spoken word, audience interaction and more!

LOS ANGELES – After being hit with a series of traumatic events, New York alt-comedy veteran Johanna Buccola did what most artists do and poured it into her work, processing her experience into a show that toured Washington State to critical acclaim. Having recently moved to L.A., she’s thrilled to now present Johanna Super Happy Bedtime Revue: A Traumedy at the Lounge Theater as part of the 2016 Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Johanna Super Happy Bedtime Revue is a “traumedy” that explores the trauma healing process through elements as diverse as slumber partying, spoken word, pretend fashion shows, dance and a whole lot more. Buccola keeps the audience on their toes with essentially a seven-in-one performance that also includes silent performing, improv, music, singing and audience interaction all woven together in a cohesive journey.

“I was able to process what had happened through this show,” Buccola said. “It turned into a very deep show that was still a lot of fun. Hollywood Fringe Festival seemed like a great venue to share these experiences with a larger audience.”

Buccola is a multi-threat artist who honed her craft performing in New York City’s alternative comedy circuit and the eclectic “Art Star” community on Manhattan’s lower east side. She was nominated for an Emerging Comics of New York Award for her solo show, Id: The Omen, one of three she wrote, choreographed and starred in Off Broadway. Johanna collaborated with legendary music producer Steve Fisk on the spoken word piece Stockholm Syndrome which played on Hollow Earth Radio in Seattle. Johanna studied acting and improvisation at Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

Karen Herr, the show’s director, has both performed and taught improv for the past 20 years, both nationally and abroad. Her comedy/improv lineage goes back to the original Upright Citizen’s Brigade, having studied under founding member Amy Poehler and other notable Chicago Improv alums such as Todd Stashwick and Adam McKay. She’s the author of eight feature length films and has appeared on television as a spokesperson for AMC’s Oscar week, for Teacher’s Insurance and AT&T. Karen also directed all three of Johanna’s previous shows Off Broadway.

The two were excited to once again collaborate on this project, which Buccola hopes will resonate with the L.A. crowd. “The aim of the material is always to connect and help others heal.”
