Voice-Over Artist Debuts Unique Solo Show at Fringe!

Acclaimed mimic Carla Delaney presents the World Premiere of “Voices,” a playful journey through recognizable characters as she triumphs to find her own true voice.

LOS ANGELES – Chances are you’ve heard Carla Delaney’s voice(s), but which is the real one? That’s essentially the question she poses in her comedic yet poignant solo show Voices, making it’s World Premiere at Asylum’s Studio C Theatre as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Carla has done recognizable voices on shows like The Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, Mike Tyson Mysteries (often mimicking other well-known characters) as well the voice of Carol Brady in that famous Snickers commercial. She can mimic almost any voice from Betty White to Drew Barrymore to Sofia Vergara to Bart Simpson and she’s offered her impressions on Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and several other shows, most recently working on Dana Carvey’s new reality show First Impressions.

But using her own voice, now that’s another story. In the one-woman comedy Voices, Carla goes “outside in” where she meets the surprising voices of her head, her heart, her snotty respiratory system and over 20 more, including some recognizable friends, making her ask the question, “Is it noisy in here, or is it just me?” In this hilarious and playful journey, Carla comes to realize the incomparable value of her own voice.

“As a birthday present to myself, I decided to write a one person show!” Carla said. “It seemed thrilling, scary, challenging, wildly fulfilling and a perfect way to honor the quirky experiences life has given me to this point.”

Carla was first influenced by the power of solo theatre through Lily Tomlin’s The Search for Intelligent Life in the Universe. A comedian at heart, Carla has trained at The Groundlings and has written and performed sketch comedy weekly with The Groundling’s Sunday Company. She learned she had a knack for impersonation when she was cast in Gerard Alessandrini’s Forbidden Broadway, the long-running musical theatre parody touted as “the SNL of Broadway.” Every night, the cast would sing and dance on stage as legendary greats like Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, Carol Channing, Barbra Streisand, Kristin Chenoweth and dozens more! Impressions have been part of her life ever since.

Throughout Voices, Carla showcases her uncanny ability for celebrity voice impersonation, as well as crafting extremely endearing and neurotic original characters, including her own body parts which comment, in play by play fashion, on hilarious life moments.

Carla also benefits from having the direction of acclaimed and award-winning solo show veteran Jessica Lynn Johnson, a published playwright, recipient of Best National Solo Artist Award and founder of Soaring Solo Theatre Company Los Angeles. For over a decade, Jessica has “edu-tained” international audiences touring her 25-character one person shows. Most recently, Johnson directed 12 solo shows in the largest solo festival on the West Coast, the Whitefire Theatre’s Solo Fest.

Not only does Voices explore the comedy of the many voices throughout her own personal journey, it also delves deeper. About a year ago, Carla was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Syndrome, a condition of the thyroid. Through that diagnosis, Carla became interested in the connection between her own mind, body and spirit. She was surprised to learn how many women in America are affected by thyroid conditions. Ironically, the thyroid is found in the throat and directly affects the voice. Carla couldn’t help but wonder if there was a connection to thyroid deficiency and the way women communicate…or don’t communicate.

“It led me to ask the question, are women speaking their truth?” she said. “As I state in my show, ‘the body is a sophisticated messenger. It tries at every turn to speak it’s truth! And if you ignore that truth, if you stuff it down, it will give you the flu.’”
