TULELAKE

SMCTC presents as part of the Hollywood Fringe, TULELAKE at The Complex in Hollywood
The strength of the Modoc tribe and their last stand. The resiliency of hundreds of thousands of Japanese Americans and their incarceration. The beauty of the Coho salmon and the largest fish death in the history of the United States.
Welcome to TULE LAKE, CALIFORNIA.

TULELAKE is a historical introspection into California’s not so distant past. It weaves true moments of time with different creation myths, to create a patchwork of movement, color, sound, and spirit. A true ensemble production, thirteen actors work together seamlessly to transform the stage into a platform of remembrance.

The project began in 2002 at Humboldt State University as part of a graduate course in Japanese theater, where creators Blake Williams and Pete Dequincy originally staged the internment section. Inspired by Noh drama and the history unfolding around them, they crafted the first draft written entirely in haiku. Thirteen years and several reincarnations later, Tulelake comes to the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Director Blake Williams brings together a cast of current San Marino high school students as well as alumni, parents, and professionals actors. “It creates an energy unlike any other cast I have ever worked with, their age spans from 15-61.”

TULELAKE remains as relevant today as the day it was written. Expanding and shapeshifting like its characters, Tulelake has gone through many changes and alterations to become its truest self. We invite you to join us as we continue this journey
