Northern Nevadan Thespians Keep It All in the Family

Bryna Chandler, born and raised in the Carson Valley and graduate of Carson High, now residing in Cleveland, Ohio, has entered two of her original plays in the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival this June. The Hollywood Fringe Festival is an annual, open-access, community-derived event celebrating freedom of expression and collaboration in the performing arts community. The Hollywood neighborhood hosts hundreds of productions by local, national, and international arts companies and independent performers in traditional theaters, cabarets, churches and parks. A completely open and uncensored approach also serves the mission of the festival of allowing the arts to flourish with no barriers. Additionally, by creating an environment where artists must self-produce their work, the Fringe motivates its participants to cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurialism in the arts.

Bryna will be traveling from Ohio with her cast and crew of “4D6 Life”, a play about fantasy role playing gamers, to join her sister, Michon Chandler, who will be playing the female lead in the second entered piece, "Kink"’. “Kink” approaches themes of misconceptions and generalizations based on appearances through a chance encounter between neighbors trapped in an elevator. The premiere of this play was held in November at Bruka Theatre of the Sierras during a weekend devoted to original works.

Michon Chandler, who is another CHS alumni and a current resident in Johnson Lane area, was the director of the play in its premiere but will step into the lead female role for the Hollywood Festival. Michon has frequently appeared in local productions as well as having directed for the Brewery Arts Center and Proscenium Players. She is joined in the cast by Reno resident Anthony Mendoza. Karen Chandler, mother of Bryna and Michon, is taking the reins as the new director. Karen was the drama instructor at CHS for over 2 decades before retiring and acting professionally. Recently, she and her husband relocated to Costa Rica where they are involved in educational volunteerism. Karen is also singing there with a local women’s a Capella group and teaching Musical Theatre workshops to Tico and expat kids. All three Chandler women are excited to be getting together from the far corners of the world to create some new and exciting theatre experiences together.

Bryna Chandler started the non-profit organization, Creative Dream Collaboration (CDC) Dramatics, in the hopes of helping other artists follow their dreams and to encourage participation at International Fringe Festivals. Following the Festival’s goals of creating self produced works, these two plays can benefit from the community’s support through sponsorship, donation or even purchasing a ticket to be donated to a student or starving artist attending the Festival. Information about CDC Dramatics and how one can become a supporter is available at www.cdcdramatics.org
