The Orig-O-naL Theater Company Debuts Their Inaugural Production the Blacks: A Clown Show at Hollywood Fringe

Los Angeles—June 6, 2015—The Orig-O-naL theatre company is pleased to announce their opening of “The Blacks: A Clown Show” at this years Hollywood Fringe. The show opens June 6, 2015 at The Other Space at The Actors Company in West Hollywood and runs 5 shows through June 20, 2015.

Using the framework of a play within a play, the show exposes racial prejudice and stereotypes while exploring black and gay identity. As a troupe of black actors re-enact the trial and ensuing murder of a white woman before a kangaroo court, they discover the pain in the space between who they are, and what society has created them to be. Buckling under this pressure and revelation, a revolution occurs, and The Blacks begin to rise up. As the black actors perform for a white court, the proceedings began to move far from a Variety Show and into dangerous and foreign territories.

The small theater company describes itself as a group that is “… dedicated to examining, probing, and discussing the social perceptions surrounding race, identity, gender, sexuality, and religion,” so the selection of Genet’s play is almost the perfect extension of their color, race, and gender-conscious artistic credo. Committed to expanding and deepening social awareness, this company is civil rights conscious and the production was birthed from the ongoing frustrations of police brutality and LGBT discrimination all over the country.

More about the Orig-O-naL Theatre Company:

Written in 1958, Orig-O-naL Theatre Company’s Artistic Director, Craig Gibson believes that in light of ongoing civil rights battles, this production is timely and be well received by audiences, especially left with comedic wit and grand absurdist humor. He says, “When you say, all people are like this, and those people are like that, that is just as absurd as anything that Genet can show you. It’s absurd that we are still having conversations about who you can legally marry, or whether your life has more or less value than mine.” For more information can be found at www.theblacksfringe.com.
