LOS ANGELES – (April 29, 2015) – Hollywood Fringe presents the world premiere of STANDUPERA, a comedic night of theatre incorporating stand-up, story, cabaret, and opera.
Starring Erin Carere and directed by Nell Teare, the serious comedy will open June 5th at Actors Company – Other Space Theatre, Los Angeles, CA.

StandUpera came about when Erin Carere first met Jocelyn Jones, her acting coach of the last 1.5 years. Jones looked at her resume and said, “so, you sing opera?” “Yes,” she responded, a hint of apology in her voice. “But you do standup,” she asked, after scanning the next section of Carere’s resume. “Yup,” she answered. “But you sing opera,” she insisted. “Yes, and other stuff, too-” Jones stopped mid-sentence, looked up and smiled. “I want you to do something involving opera and standup.” And so, STANDUPERA was born! www.Standupera.com
WORDS FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT
I am a singer. And when people ask, “Oh! What kind of music do you sing?” My answer causes a lot of confusion. This is because, in reality, I am a classical-pop-crossover-Broadway-jazz-singer-songwriter.
“Wait. So, you do… everything?”
Yes.
Sometimes I try to explain it like, I’m like if Andrea Bocelli and Bette Midler had a baby who hung out with Leonard Cohen. That’s what I do. Sort of.
STANDUPERA is the story of a woman who sings, who makes mistakes, and lets you laugh at them… er… WITH her…Yes, it’s a comedy!
That woman is Erin Carere. Me! I currently reside in Los Angeles where I am an actress, singer, screenwriter, playwright, and radio host. My best TV credits are dubious at best but you know, I got more phone calls about my guest starring role on “Sex Sent Me To The ER” than I got singing in professional opera companies or performing at SXSW as a singer songwriter with a critically acclaimed album (from which I have made a whopping $50 bucks.) It is the juxtaposition of this strange time in our culture, my sweet but goofy hometown folk, my poor choices in life and seeking of redemption, and love of music and all things dramatic that culminate in my newest one woman show, “STANDUPERA.” Blending comedy, story-telling, multi-media, music, and some surprises!

BIO’S
Erin Carere – (Playwright / Actress / Opera Singer) An award winning playwright (“My Life as a Phone Psychic,” winner, Best of the MN Fringe, 2004), award winning songwriter and performer, (“Best Female Performer 2010” for poet’s lovely daughter by Rockwired mag, SXSW performer that same year), and award winning comedy short film producer (“Cake!” winner, best comedy short, Hollywood & Vine Film Fest.) Muir is an actress, singer, author, screenwriter, comedienne, and four-leaf clover finder. “Classically trained, hooked on pop, and schooled in soul.” She has studied at Manhattan School of Music as well as with Gary Busby at UCI. She has performed stand up in clubs including Comedy Store in Hollywood and Flappers in Burbank. She has toured the US and Europe as a singer-songwriter as well as with her previous one-woman cabaret, “The One.” Venues of note include First Ave in Minneapolis, the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip,and many a dive bar and small music venue throughout the US and Europe. Currently she is writing an action-thriller screenplay with her writing partner as well as a magical realism novel, and has been commissioned to record the theme for an Italian film shooting this summer (La Bataglia di Gorthene by Piero Sanna.) Nell Teare – (Director) Nell Teare is a Texas native who began performing with her mother as a child. She attended The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston and then went on to study Musical Theatre at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Nell was a part of the original cast of Memphis, which went on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical. Nell is the founder of Harmon Creek Press, through which, she published her first children’s book, Celia and the Witches,in 2009. In 2010, Nell moved to LA and became a part of the Randy Newman Musical, Harps and Angels, at the Mark Taper Forum. Since, she has been seen in Film and on Televison (Restraint, NCIS, State of Affairs). In 2012, Nell began directing and has helmed twenty seven projects in just three years. These projects include book trailers, short films, music videos, and stage productions. Nell’s film, Sweet Talk, was just nominated for Best Drama at Indie Fest and she is gearing up to shoot, Homeless Love, in LA this Summer and her first feature film in Texas this Fall. Nell’s 2014 Fringe Festival directing debut, Rock and Rolls Greatest Lovers, played to sold out audiences at The Lillian Theatre and she is so excited to be here again this year with, StandUpera.
