Los Angeles, CA – Hope & Fear. Life & Death. Love & War. Rich & Poor. All of these will affect our lives but their effects will rarely be the same, so will you listen or lecture? Condone or condemn? Help or hinder? These are the questions that Christopher Carver’s new, full-length, one-act play, No Ex’p Required…, will be asking us, this June.
Set in a Pre-9/11 New York City, No Ex’p Required…, is the story of two, average Gen-X’ers, plodding through their lives until a chance encounter between them escalates into the possibility of something more. However, once the encroaching city and unforeseen obstacles begin to weigh in on their budding romance, they quickly find themselves face-to-face with one of life’s most difficult dilemmas; the dilemma of free will.
On the surface, No Ex’p Required…, is a poignant and timely tale about navigating the twists and turns of a shotgun romance, but underneath, lies a morality piece on women’s rights. Inspired by the resurgent political discussion on the topic (and his own personal experiences), Carver disclosed, “…[the play] has been nothing short of a vision quest." And after you discover that he’s the eldest of eight with seven younger sisters, it’s not difficult to understand why the fledgling playwright felt compelled to tell a story that would, "…help reestablish the fact that we all need to stop telling women what they can do with their bodies.” And that’s what’s at the heart of No Ex’p Required…, a play that reminds us just how much the times have changed in the last century, and unfortunately, how much they haven’t.
So, get yourselves to the theater, Los Angelenos, because with Carver’s incisive script, plus a stellar cast of performers including Alexander Roberts, Marquel Skinner, Claire Kirk, Lane Allison, Tyler Courtad, Hugh Kinslow, David Coretti, Diana Caravella and Brighid Fleming, No Ex’p Required… is guaranteed to be a highlight at this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival.
It opens June 6th and will run through the 27th @ the Complex’s East Theatre, located at 6468 Santa Monica Blvd., along Hollywood’s famous “Theatre Row.” Tickets are $15 and are available now through the Hollywood Fringe website at hff15.org/2291.
Performance dates are: Sat., June 6th (preview); Fri., June 12th; Sun., June 14th; Fri., June 19th; Wed., June 24th and Sat., June 27th. All showtimes will be at 7:00PM. There is street parking in the area. Valet services will be available on Friday & Saturdays
