King of Kong: A Musical Parody is proud to be a part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Written by Amber Ruffin, current writer for Late Night With Seth Meyers and veteran of Boom Chicago and The Second City and Lauren Van Kurin, a veteran of The Second City, Annoyance, iO and Sacred Fools, they challenge us to a game of Donkey Kong against Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe in this 2 person musical comedy inspired by the cult documentary King of Kong, which follows 2 men on their quest to hold the Donkey Kong classic video game high score- King of Kong: A Musical Parody.

New York International Fringe Festival Best Overall Musical Award winner, King of Kong: A Musical Parody, is an original 2 person musical comedy written by Ruffin and Van Kurin. The New York Times called it “Joyfully Daft!” You’ll meet Billy Mitchell, the evil Donkey Kong champion from Hollywood Florida with it all; hot hair, a hot wife and a hot sauce business. Nothing can get in this reigning Donkey Kong Champion’s way. Or can it? His competitor, Steve Wiebe, the constantly failing to succeed family man with a secret talent for playing Donkey Kong. Will Billy Mitchell continue to be number 1 or will Steve Wiebe triumph and take the crown? This new musical features original songs such as “Failure Is Just A Success That You Failed To Succeed At”, “What Billy Mitchell Wants Billy Mitchell Gets”, and “Lick My Sauce”. Van Kurin returns to play Steve Wiebe. The role of Billy Mitchell will be played by Top of Fringe Winner, Brendan Hunt!

The wildly successful documentary King of Kong: Fistfull of Quarters instantly became a cult classic. Whether you’ve seen the documentary or not, you will love the musical! “Originally we wrote it as an 8 person show. But then I thought, why not play all the roles ourselves, just the 2 of us?” says Van Kurin. “We were writing all these kick-ass songs and just giving them away because we weren’t the right race or gender. How could we complain about a lack of great roles for women while we were writing a show foar men?” says Ruffin. “We’re just greedy.” Van Kurin adds.

Brendan Hunt (director) is an actor and writer based in Los Angeles. His award-winning play Absolutely Filthy, won Best of Fringe at both New York and Hollywood.
