IMMERSIVE NEW MUSICAL RAPTURE MERGES FRINGE THEATER WITH CHURCH SERVICE

Small wonder that church services are more popular than plays– they offer free snacks, free wine, and a chance to sing along with quality music. New musical RAPTURE is seeking to up-end that imbalance by offering an immersive theatre experience that puts the audience in the congregation of a church service going off the rails. Theatregoers are invited to take Communion, confess their sins, and join the performers in song, as the darkly comedic love story unfolds.

The show’s inaugural production is taking place at the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival, with performances throughout June. Drag queens, full frontal nudity, and cynical satire are the bread and butter of “fringe theatre”, where it can be hard for a show to get traction and grab attention. But RAPTURE stands out by tackling serious questions about faith and forgiveness, with a sense of humor and fun.

The show features an eclectic mix of 8 original songs, ranging from traditional gospel to contemporary hip-hop. The score is by composer Benjamin Stanton, who spent years working as the musical director of a church, bringing a measure of authenticity to the religious music. But it’s sung primarily by Al Rahn, lead singer of the progressive rock band Sixstep, who is joined onstage by the lovely actress Thia Schuessler.

The show is performed at Actors Company (916 N. Formosa Ave, 90046) as part of this year’s Hollywood Fringe Festival. For more info and a preview of the show’s music, visit www.RaptureMusical.com.
