What I liked

Some funny bits especially the dancing.

What I didn't like

After this show I just sort of thought to myself, “What is the point? Why did this show need to exist?” The arc of the show is naive American goes to Amsterdam with self-loathing, goes to a sex club, and feels good about himself?

It has such a first-thought, tourist-y relationship to almost everything in it: German women are like this, Australian women say “crikey”, Mexico is scary, gay men are scary, if you’re in a sex club it’s so weird when someone masturbates next to you. No element is examined deeper than it can be mentioned for a laugh.

There’s a section specifically about a certain football club’s identity that I think is quite funny, and practically irresponsible that it’s not couched in any sort of context or examination afterwards. It’s just brought up for shock and laughs and then the show moves on.

There’s also an extremely retrograde sentiment through the whole show which is “My life was changed by the sex I had with women”. For a show that is sort of about mental health, there’s very little self-regard about his emotional state until it’s convenient for it to get resolved.

this is show would be fine if this were being developed now, it has decent bones. The fact that this is the encore presentation of a decades-old show is shocking.

My overall impression

A lazy show that should be much better considering it’s 20 years old.
