Let me just say, the puns in this show were absolutely paw-some! They had me howling with laughter. “Pawsedena”, “Los Felines”, I mean, come on! That’s comedy gold right there. And Rue’s journey, while full of ups and downs, was heartwarming and relatable. Who hasn’t felt like a fish out of water at some point, right? The standout for me, though, has got to be the music. I’ve found myself humming the tune of “Meow’s the Moment” more than once since the show. I’m not kidding, those songs were seriously catchy.
What I didn't like
Overall, Runaway Rue was one of the best things I’ve seen in Fringe. Some clearer callbacks to the first iteration of the show, “Rescue Rue”, would have helped link the two shows more smoothly for those of us familiar with the original. But, all in all, that’s a minor hiccups in an otherwise fabulously entertaining and heartfelt show. I’m definitely glad I caught this one!
My overall impression
Runaway Rue was an absolute blast – a pop musical packed with heart, humor, and a whole lot of puppetry magic. Rue’s central conflict is relatable and family-friendly, while being something that kids can easily latch onto. The kids in the audience seemed to LOVE it!
