I didn’t actually know what to expect of the show because I didn’t watch much Jem growing up. But I felt like the show did a great job of not gatekeeping the experience and making sure than non-Jem initiates could follow the story and understand who the characters were without feeling gatekept or left out. a tough task. I loved the music especially, and I liked the queer love story addition. I thought the costume changes and the doubling up on roles was really silly and fun too.
What I didn't like
The sound was off a bit during the performance I saw, I don’t know if the cast was mic’d or not, but I could barely hear Jem’s singing during any of the songs. So either her mic wasn’t working well or she wasn’t projecting.
My overall impression
What a fun, irreverent, queer trip through a classic show, welcoming of all experience levels!
