Hannah turns in a vulnerable, funny, compelling performance that never descends into wallowing, talking with her 11 year old self in an attempt to get her to accept uncomfortable truths that could spare her a lot of pain in the future.
Honest, relatable, and full of moments that made me go: “no… that’s too silly, there’s no way a religious family would actually do that, would they?”
But also: puppet good, puppet funny, I like puppet :3
What I didn't like
11 year old Hannah called me a 4.5 out of 10 on the cuteness scale, which just demolished my self-image. I thought I was really cute before, but now I’m not so sure.
Also all autobiographical shows would be greatly enhanced by the use of a puppet
My overall impression
An astute analysis of one’s own childhood, the trappings of religion, queerness, and of course, lying. Also, Hannah’s 11 year old self is very well played by a puppet. A genius artistic decision that never stops giving.
