The writing is excellent, especially the comedic songwriting. Her characters are sharp and distinct. I really felt transported to different times and places with each scene. I loved the visuals, they were equally funny.
What I didn't like
There were times when it was difficult to understand Catherine’s singing narration. Either the notes seemed a little out of her range, or the music was drowning her out just a bit. All in all, it sounded as if she could use more breath behind her singing voice. There were scenes that seemed a bit long in relation to the subject matter. I think some of the middle school story can be cut or trimmed, so we can get back to the topic of consent faster. I think this will help the overall feel of the run time, as it did feel a little long. I don’t think it’s bad to have long solo shows, but this is a case where it feels like some fat could be trimmed for a tighter story.
My overall impression
Catherine is a talent that I think with more shows (since this was her last) and more audience (people need to see her, she has such a unique voice) she would really shine. She is so talented and gives a great performance showcasing her many talents, songwriting, percussion, and comedy. I think this run was a great start and hope she continues to polish her solo show and perform it beyond the Hollywood Fringe.
