My overall impression

Being a lady of my day, I had to see a show with a review that says “American Psycho for the Hipster Generation.” (ID Magazine)

You are in Dominic’s apartment for the entirety of the play, watching him as he drinks, orders a prostitute with ardent specifications, and works on his novel, dressed in a Chinese Robe. As much as I didn’t want to empathize with the lead, I found myself drawn into his intricate fabric of manipulation and lies. What is this “do-nothing” actually going to accomplish? The answer is heartbreaking, making for a shocking climax and a somber mood to finish.

Bravo to Director/Lead Actor Richard Crawford for boldly staging such a seldom-dramatized, heavy subject. Standout performance to Ruthie Stephens, whose portrayal as the Ester brings breath & compassion that this play so desperately needs. I’ll definitely keep my eye out for more from Brooklyn Studio Lab.
