ONE-MAN SHOW: AN ELEGY OF 1980S RURAL CHINA PREMIERES AT HOLLYWOOD FRINGE

May 17, 2019

The Synesthesians presents “NEAR DAWN,” an original solo performance written by Zoe Wang and performed by Chengqi Wang, which opens in Hollywood Fringe Festival 2019 at the New American Theatre on June 9th.

Inspired by a true event with its details based on the tradition and history of China’s underdeveloped countryside in the early 1980s, the play is about a boy, a fly and a corpse on one breezy night.

NEAR DAWN tells a poignant story about life and death, belonging and loneliness. It is a hybrid of fiction & truth, absurdity & solemnity with a mixed timeline of past, present, and prophecy. It is a miniature portrait of contemporary rural China at the dawn of the nation’s largest economic reform.

The production team of NEAR DAWN is a group of young Chinese artists at USC and UCLA. We gather together for our shared passion in theatrical arts with an aspiration to create a piece that is essential and truthful to our own artistic and cultural identity.

We cordially invite you
