“Commence. Co-mensing, as in menstruation? To mense together. Let us commence. Meaning to flow forward together.”

After an unexpected introduction, Kelli and Arlin spend an evening debating the details of what it means to be a woman. Their conversation forces them to examine their biases about gender and sex, and to ultimately find the common ground between them.

A note from the author:
“Life is not free of pain and neither [is this] play. But it’s also full of beauty, and absurdity, and stuff that makes you laugh hard enough to blow milk out your nose. And it’s full of blessing, the divine and the human, and sometimes they’re the same. In the moments when you just can’t jump the hurdle, it is astonishing that circumstance (or one’s own preposterousness) will nudge us into somebody’s path. Someone who sees you over that hurdle, or just sees you. And it makes all the difference. That is the alchemy of which human beings are capable. To take the frozen coal of another’s despair and transform it, through connection, to the gold of moving forward.”
