“Son of a Bitch Winning at the Fringe”
By David Nairne — Son Of A Bitch, running at the Broadwater during Hollywood Fringe 2019, focuses on Lee Atwater’s — Republican-Strategist-Liar-Driven-Liar-Brilliant-Liar-Son-of-a-Bitch— rise to power. The piece asks and answers two important questions:
What are you willing to do to get what you want?
What happens when the biggest liar in the room is also the one telling the truth?
One more question is left unanswered…and it’s a butt kicker.
We track Lee Atwater, played with a tangible charming menace by Ben Hethcoat, from his time as a college Republican through to his death shortly after he instrumented the victory of George H. W. Bush in 1988.

SON OF A BITCH
Lee Atwater, the SOB in question, changed the American political playbook. Everyone should know his story. It is one of the great morality plays on this nation’s history. Lee Atwater was the great cancer on the America scene, the great cancer on the Republican Party, and in the end, fittingly he was the great cancer on himself.
He embodied the spirit of Karl Rove, George W. Bush and Donald Trump. Last year Billy Ray Brewton wrote and directed A Beast/A Burden, an intelligent and insightful Bio-play on the artist Chris Burden. This year he’ll direct from a script by Lucy Gillespie (author of HFF18’s Keeping Up With the Prozorovs).

THE STORY OF INFAMOUS REPUBLICAN STRATEGIST LEE ATWATER BROUGHT TO LIFE IN HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL PRODUCTION OF “SON OF A BITCH”
Los Angeles, CA – When Lee Atwater passed away in 1991, he left behind a legacy that shaped the modern political landscape, and turned negative politics into the norm. Though he asked for forgiveness for his ‘sins’ on his deathbed (including attacks against politicians Tom Turnipseed, Gary Hart, and Michael Dukakis), the damage had been done. Premiering at the 2019 Hollywood Fringe Festival, “Son of a Bitch” is a new play that grapples with Atwater’s role in the 1988 Bush/Quayle Presidential campaign, and his legacy.
