What I liked

I’ve seen all of Robot Teammate’s previous Fringe musicals, and the thing that struck me about this one was the commitment to a specific musical style and the amazing, eclectic ensemble. While the Robots play the main characters, as they always do, I was blown away by all the interesting, hilarious supporting characters (shoutout to Janis Crisp and Trustworthy Tim!). Molly Dworsky was believably innocent and scrappy in the title role, and I also just adored Chris Bramante’s Veegan (if you’re familiar with the show OLIVER!, he provides Fagin vibes in the best way possible). Dave Reynolds was the MVP of the show playing not one, not two, but THREE of the most hysterical characters onstage, and Kat Primeau’s Duchess sparkles every time she steps into the light. And that HAIR, oh my God. I also want to recognize Branson Nejame’s fantastic songwriting. The hooks are so damn clever I was singing them in my head all afternoon. I’ll gladly buy a ticket to the next musical he writes! He’s a very exciting new composer in town.

What I didn't like

As is the case with all Fringe shows, brevity is the soul of wit, and the performances are usually pretty short. I felt like the ending, while emotionally grounded, was a little rushed. Would have loved to see more of Veegan’s resolution! I don’t know if he (or Jim Val Jim, for that matter!) would shake hands and make new friends so easily. But hopefully the show will get a chance to expand someday and we can see a longer, more fleshed out finale!

My overall impression

HOT POCKETS! This lively, hilarious period piece about a daughter who just wants to be wanted by her mother will have you laughing till you’re sore one second and clutching your heart the next.
