What I liked

An impressive balance of hilarity and emotions, with characters and a world which feel plucked right out of 2007 – a major nostalgia trip – thanks to some excellent writing, acting, and directing.

What I didn't like

For those less acquainted with fanfiction, Monty Python, or other references, it may take longer to become invested in the story. The show does go to lengths to not assume deep familiarity with these elements, however, so that is not a prerequisite to enjoy the show.

My overall impression

Sunbathe in Darkness is a deftly-handled exploration of the growing pangs of adolescence, told through a frankly ridiculous premise. That apparent disconnect, however, does nothing but elevate the emotional core of the show. The fanfiction elements provide a healthy dose of levity to the story, while slowly opening a window into the protagonist, Casey.

The entire cast deserves high praise for bringing an excellent script to life. Thanks to them, the characters feel real — a feat made all the more impressive considering how frequently the story jumps back and forth between the real and fanfictional worlds, requiring a cast nimble enough to switch roles on a dime.

If you’re looking for a show that delivers hearty servings of both over-the-top humor and heartfelt emotions, be sure to check out Sunbathe In Darkness. Prep or goth, this show is for everybody.
