Code(Switch) Yellow is a one-person show that uses physicality via Clown, poetry, and storytelling to showcase the way each of us feels misunderstood and unheard for all of the labels others attach to us. Using four acts, each separated by a clown turn, this production addresses each of these themes: “I am not seen,” “I am not heard,” “I am not felt,” “I am not gotten.” Issues of identity via three main labels: woman, asexual, and Asian are woven through each of these acts, to demonstrate how assumptions can be oppressive, hurtful, and keep people from really seeing the humanity in each other. While dealing with dramatic aspects, the use comedy via Clown turns and metaphors for these more painful themes are meant to help open people up to how much we may suffer and not realize it, as well as realize the
humor in the pain we may try to hide, since so much of us experience similar struggles. The use of physicality is meant to show the embodiment of feelings we may not find voice for, and the clown turns are to show how to hold humor and despair at the same time: how we can hold both extremes, such as love and hurt, and exist in that in-between.
