What I liked

The Basic Mashup Concept and The Enthusiastic Cast

What I didn't like

It doesn’t go much farther than The Basic Mashup Concept, and if it’s going to pretend to be a musical it needs either an original song score or better ideas of what to purloin and repurpose!

My overall impression

Every Fringe season brings a new crop of silly spoofs, and this one falls squarely in The Middle: a High Concept that generates a hearty laugh from time to time but is weakened by a tepid “song score” which is dependent on sitcom theme songs from two generations ago. A talented cast, given striking costumes but nothing else to work with, is dominated by its men: Michael Lanahan, funny as a Victorian misogynist; Bryan Krasner, with a unique new take on “Frank” (the Monster), and Graham Skipper, wringing every ounce of Zach Galifanakis out of Dr Frankenstein. An over-the-top subplot involving a rivalry between a tiara-clad Jane Austen and a tiara-clad Mary Shelley fills out the speedy sixty minutes.
