The Oz Monologues is a fun and unique approach to a beloved fictional universe that has been interpreted and reimagined the world over. Fortunately, this show secures its place as a welcomed addition to the many works that pay homage to the timeless classic and the wonderful world of Oz. Characters from the story take the stage in a series of "letters" to their various cohorts in which they provide insights and, often comical, interpretations of the characters that provide interesting new perspectives into their motivations and backstories. A modestly-scaled yet ambitious production with it's share of peaks and valleys, fitting for an exploration and expansion of the OZ mythos. True to namesake, the reached-for objective in tone is more meditative than musical, as Dorothy, Scarecrow, and an assortment of Oz's most famous and infamous denizens expound upon, challenge, or deepen our understanding of their public and personal histories through monologue. As there are no current shortages of jaunty excursions down the Yellow Brick Road, I for one appreciated the starker and more introspective treatment of this universe and these characters. A Visual Feast!---Superbly realized Costumes (by Etoile?) and Makeup, set against a full-screen electronically animated Oz---plus the chance to take photos afterward! Pricey, but worth the cost and the trek to the fringes of the Fringe fest, over the border into WeHo! Alas, the 53-minute show itself isn't quite as wonderful, though each of Our Favorite Characters gets a solo say---sometimes contradicting what we remember from Our Favorite Movie. A wonderful workout for the imagination!... full review
