Juliette Marshall stars in a one woman show called, Wavy & Blurry. It’s a story about an actress named Jules, who wakes up from her exotic Mexican holiday daydream to find herself back in a recovery program, again. The story begins when she is asked to recount her past during “group time". She also plays the role of Kathleen, the “group leader”, who invites the room to breathe, breathe, breathe & invite curiosity into the room. Using her laser sharp spirit radar, she decides that Jules is the one nominated to share with the group. Jules then takes the group on a musical journey through her life. From odd fables of bizarre and depressed family members, to unfathomably disturbing encounters with doctors, we laugh and cry in this honest yet humorous look at one woman’s recovery journey.
Her songs speak of the times when she had “real dreams” and when she used to be a star, she was in Xanadu for Godsakes; She shares her unapologetic plea in songs like ‘I need help, or what it was like when after her intervention with her family, the doctor at UCLA diagnosed her for “an adjustment disorder”, Are you fucking kidding me, she howls. We start to notice he string of the absurd and the dark yet humorous reality of those who lose their way and are simply looking for a better life.
Marshall shares this relevant story at a time when so many of us have been or know those in recovery. It’s time that was can have a reflective piece to look at the culture as a whole, and smile about it along the way.
