What I liked

Every single one of the musical theater jokes and nods were on target. I was laughing most of the show, the songs were modeled after the characters “originating musicals” and the premise is truly unique and fun. Obviously the puppetry is amazing! The Hamilton vs. Music Man bit was done really well. The Alien puppeteers do a spot on job with the costume. The actors really did their homework with their original characters and covered several other iconic roles as well.

What I didn't like

I wish that the characters were explored more or given time to set up the show. I understand the premise “the Alien invades musical theater land” but, that was about it for the story. Literally chaos and confusion run most of what would be considered the first act. It wasn’t until about half way through that the hero started to become apparent and the story emerged (aside from the Alien). I really think that the book needs some reordering, maybe a few songs need to be combined, eliminated or reworked and the vocals could have used a little more support. I was looking for a little more depth, instead I found the show to have basically one note “save Annie”. The additional material added to the show was very apparent but did not add to the story line or satisfy the need for complete story arch. I was also confused with the choices made with the “fight choreography” there were just so many things happening some clear knaps, slow motion “wire style” moments, and comedic hits. With a show with this much violence I really wish they would have invested in a fight choreographer.

My overall impression

The show is enjoyable and I see what they want to make it overall. The choreography is clever (nice musical theater nods, jazz hands and all) and the lyrics are smart. Stand outs were Levanna, Allie (steals the show as Annie) and Suzanne. I have no doubt you will be entertained especially if you are a fan of musicals however, there is room for improvement.
