My overall impression
Michael Shaw Fisher told me to bring my demons- I was happy to do so- and my mother insisted I bring a rosary for myself and my date. She was very surprised that a younger generation wouldn’t be too scared of The Exorcist to make a musical parody. I guess you could say I’m more one to follow a bit of very pertinent advice- “Make peace with your demons!”
I loved this musical. The rock soundtrack was quite pleasant, and wow, what a surprisingly marvelous and powerful voice on Laura Sperrazza! I liked how the show began, too- as though there weren’t a beginning.
As I told director Pat Towne afterward, I, as a Catholic and participant in other religions besides- some of which may or may not involve contact with demons- thought the show did a great job with being respectful toward religion and having a lot of fun with it at the same time. In this regard the show was exactly my cup of tea, and exactly the sort of thing I go to theatre hoping to see.
I must say there are two things which I especially favored in this play, which go hand in hand- the exploration of Pazuzu and also the beginning of his relationship with Regan-I-mean-Megan. The movie doesn’t really touch on either- they don’t even mention his name. It was so gratifying to see it done, and in such a “human” way. It’s just the sort of relationship I might have imagined, and more, with their interpretation. Bryce Blue did a great job as Pazuzu- I would never have guessed he was filling in as an understudy that night.
Bravo, Orgasmico- your shows just keep getting better each year!
