My overall impression

Let Me Out is one of those rare shows that has you comparing everything that’s happening on stage to your own life. The show is being marketed as a coming out story, but I saw it more of a coming of age story.

I enjoyed most of the actors. For me the strongest actors were John, Mona, Jessie and Courtney. I especially enjoyed the interaction between moan and Jessie. I wanted to see more of Mona. Know more of her back story. Courtney was great for comic relief, but was still believable as a character. John was the dart of this play, just like he was the heart of the group. I never felt like the actor was acting. Every time the character of Jessica was on stage, I immediately remembered that I was watching a show. I felt that she had absolutely no range of emotion, and was not listening to what was being said around her. Her performance was something I would expect to see in a beginning acting class in high school. Luke was not bad, but he didn’t have any stand out moments for me.

I really enjoyed the story. The lines were written just like teenagers speak. The only problem I had with the script was the opening scene. I didn’t really get that Luke and John were best friends, or that Mona was the responsible one, or that Courtney was the party girl. The group dynamic was not completely clear, so later in the show when people break out of those molds, or relationships change, it doesn’t have as a dramatic feel as it should. The last scene between John and Jessie was beautiful. There is nothing about that scene that I would change. I wanted to run up on stage and hug John, and tell him that everything would be okay!

This is a show that would definetly benefit from having a bigger stage, and their own light plot. With what they had, the staging was done very well. I wish the actors would have found their light.

I would reccomend this show to anyone who has graduate or is in high school now. I feel that this story is extremely relevant, and more people need to see it. I can’t wait to see what else this play write has coming up!

Well done! I wish I could see it again.
