Dear Barbie is devised piece of theater inspired by the revitalization of America’s favorite plastic doll. In the wake of last summer’s mega hit movie, a group of students from Cypress College have spent the better part of a year talking about and digging into the conversation around Barbie and beauty. How does beauty raise us up and tear us down? What is the connection between money and beauty? What are the historical implications? And how has our society evolved regarding the subject? These are the questions that are central to the work. The show is movement based with mostly original writing. Using the tale of Medusa, we have anchored our show to the indelible myth of a woman turned monster because of her beauty. The show aims to ask questions as well as provide testimony.
