"The Mermaid Who Learned How to Fly"

Kyla Garcia's exuberence and energy palpably fill the space in this one woman show about a young woman coming of age in love. Through fairy godmother plot devices, dance, and structured scenes, she takes us through the late teens and early twenties of a woman's navigation through high school and college, the two great loves of her young life, and the writing that holds her together. What the piece lacks in structure and production is made up for in enthusiasm, for it is the actress herself that... full review

IN FOOD EMPIRE

This piece informs us from Jamie Oliver's Ted Talk about the harm our food is doing to us in an interactive, mostly physical performance style. It lacks focus but is filled with heart. I expected more mime from the show than the show offered. This piece would probably best be served by a little revision and tailoring towards schools.... full review

Fat Pig

"Rare is the dude who is willing to stand up for the shit he believes in," says Carter in this, the best of all Neil LaBute plays, and this stands as the crux of almost all of his work. This is a very capably acted and directed production of this show and I would recommend it to anyone who has never seen a Neil LaBute play or enjoys his work. The actors do a great job of not sinking into pettiness and cynicism and retain their heart throughout this production.... full review

WEARHORSE

While I appreciate the themes of the play, as they are relevant, the piece feels like it could use another draft. The actors were fully committed and, of course, the horse itself was a fairly ingenious design. The staging and lighting seemed to have a couple of issues. That said, Fringe is for plays that are on the fringe and push boundaries. This play definitely aims at that. ... full review

A Gay Importance of Being Earnest

This is an enchanting and delightful production that I am sure Oscar Wilde himself would've enjoyed the hell out of. A sassy and smartly designed show with an engaging joy from the performers involved make this trimmed classic a fun romp at the theatre.... full review

THE CONDUCT OF LIFE

steve madar · June 07, 2014 certified reviewer
Because of the dark and graphic nature of this play, not everyone will walk out of the theatre singing praises, but praise is heartily deserved. The bravery of the actors is to be commeded and production is tight. The play is a slow burn into your psyche and will probably take a day to digest. But, this dark play, like Dostoyevsky or Bukowski, offers glimmers of hope through the wreckage of modern life. Take your medicine.... full review

HOT CAT

Theatre Movement Bazaar does it again with another entertaining adaptation of classic theatre. I enjoyed the colorful and irreverent retelling of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and the performances were solid throughout. While not strong on story, the style is what makes this work and they have that in spades.... full review

Obviously Michael

I really enjoyed this show. It is a sweet piece of theatre that really captures the sometimes lonely journey of being a kid navigating the pressures of peers and expectations. At times, I was reminded of how uncomfortable it was to be a kid leaving the world of total support and moving into the uncertainty of school. Great directing and some fun performances highlight this show.... full review

Lemon Boots

Lemon Boots is a fun show and lets everyone in the audience know that the beauty of a work of art is the act of making it. It is not a linear story line, or a traditional movement piece, but it is more a celebration of the ensemble and that is wherein it derives it's greatest joy.... full review
