A compelling tale of complicity: Sarah Doyle’s Anaconda

Anaconda is a play that takes an honest look at the aftermath of bullying and the search for redemption. Two people have the chance to mend the wounds of the past at the expense of their futures. If you had everything you ever wanted, would you risk it all to be forgiven?

During research for another project, Doyle was examining incidences of trauma experienced by youths and recalled an abuse scandal that occurred at Sydney’s Trinity Grammar School in 2000, during which male boarders committed molestations against other male boarders. Simultaneously, the legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno was fired for his complicity in covering up his colleague’s crimes. The public outrage on both sides of the issue inspired her to look at the accepted rituals of hazing and bullying in high schools and other esteemed institutions of education.

Anaconda is being presented on the black box stage at Theatre of NOTE. The production puts the emphasis on the words and the strong cast – the vessels for the message. “One thing these incidents all have in common is the silence. The silence of the victims, the perpetrators and the cultures surrounding them which permit these atrocities,” said Doyle.

Anaconda runs from June 15 to June 23 as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival at the Theatre of NOTE. Preview show is a week earlier on June 8 at Open Fist Theatre AKA Fringe Central.
