"A SMOKIN’ GOOD TIME” AT THE HOLLYWOOD FRINGE [FILM] FESTIVAL?

This year SINE ZEN NON (NothingWithoutZen) screens at the Hollywood Fringe [Film] Festival on Wed. June 13th (Open Fist Theatre, 6209 S.M Blvd) and on Thurs. June 14th & Sat. June 16th (Elephant Theatre 1076 Lillian Way.), all showings at 4:20PM…just don’t call it “a Zen Stoner Comedy.”

“I joked once that we didn’t want to make just another stupid zen stoner comedy, we wanted to make a somewhat-intelligent zen stoner comedy,” JB (Mister) Pinc, the film’s producer, explains, “and we’ve been stuck with that ‘Zen Stoner Comedy’ phrase defining the movie ever since.”

Mister Pinc [played by Mike Saad in the movie] continues: “As it says on our poster, ‘Fry your mind…and the rest will follow.’ SZN is about a ZenHead visiting Amsterdam to hash out life’s big questions – emphasis on the ’hash’ - so I think ‘Zen Stoner Comedy’ is redundant, is what I think.”

“I’d like to think that there’s something for everyone in the movie, ZenHeads and NonHeads alike,” says the feature’s director, Norwegian filmmaker BW, also known as B-Well [played by Thomas Sandnaes]. “Det er ikke alle om zen, narkotika, og rock ‘n’ roll!” [It’s not all about zen, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll!]

Many of the movie’s cast & crew hope to attend these Hollywood showings of this Director’s Cut version of the film, which includes many scenes deleted in the online (producer’s) version at zen420.com, including footage taken at the recent 5-year anniversary screening. As with that event, costumes are encouraged for this one.

The SZN target audience is the 420 crowd, but as the Zen Ken [played by Kevin Carr] urges in the movie (after a monster hit, of course), “Don’t partake of this stuff to escape the world, man, use it to enter the world more deeply – deepen your awareness of the mind and spirit…”

He then sputters, “…wisdom and compassion, dude, gotta cough.”
