LOS ANGELES – It’s awards season and a married couple, The Goodlucks, is on edge when there is awards buzz from their critically-acclaimed stage play they performed and produced.

But what happens when two successful married actors compete during the awards season? Envy rears its green head.

Maatology Productions is about to showcase its newest project, the one-act play, The Goodlucks during the 2024 Hollywood Fringe Festival in June at The Madnani Theater. The Goodlucks will make its world premiere at The Festival.
Set in Chelsea, New York in the present day, the cast of characters are the husband, Bert Goodluck, a stalwart theater actor who produced the hit Broadway stage play Ossie and Ruby, on the life of acting husband and wife Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee. His wife, Juanita Tyson, who co starred in the play, is a successful film star, who became the star of the play, yet reluctantly wants to continue with a tour of the play.

Conflict ensues when the couple gets anxious of the possibility of becoming the first African American married couple to be nominated for a major theater award.
Rounding out the cast of characters are Bailey Goodluck, the non binary Gen Zer and LGBTian daughter; George Dandridge, the best friend and acting colleague to Bert; and Lynne, the niece and publicist to Juanita.

Two of the cast members are returning to Hollywood Fringe to perform in The Goodlucks—actresses Tanya Neely, who will play Juanita, and Jade Jackson who will play Bailey. Both women were cast in Maatology Productions’ award-winning and audience fave, The Definition Association that was showcased at The Festival in 2021.

“This (one act)play will focus on many subject matters from adversity between creatives, women of color in the film industry, and the value of certain awards as it relates to the industry,” said Marcus Ma’at Atkins, the show’s head writer, director and producer. “It’s an honest and frank piece that examines the industry as a whole and the people who deal with it on its surface.”

Atkins hopes that The Goodlucks will bring attention to the standards that are given to certain people because of their ethnicity, gender and what is accepted as valuable with ones talent.

“The Goodlucks will make every person who are artists or creatives take a second look at the reason why they are who they are and the people around them.” Atkins said.
