Humor: the silver bullet that disarms and wounds without ever leaving a scratch. Beth Megill enjoys creating dances that blend movement with theater, narrative with abstraction, imagery with physicality and words with action. Her work reflects her belief that dance need not always be about the gymnastic capabilities of the performer, but can be about all people: our quirks, our challenges, our follies, and our fun.

Through spoken word, theatrical scenarios and both playful and moving dance sequences, “8 Piece Legs and Thighs” allows the bullet of humor to pierce our defensive armor and allows us to laugh at our ways. Through a variety of dance styles including contemporary modern, jazz, tap and performance art techniques, this evening of dance is both accessible and entertaining.

For the Hollywood Fringe, Megill & Company presents two dance works. The first, called “Just a Girl’s Story,” explores the transformation process of a young girl as she emerges from the unassuming observer into an eye-catching vixen. The title work, “8 Piece Legs and Thighs,” draws out the humor and theater embedded in a women’s choice for self-elected fitness and objectification. Like placing ourselves in a bucket to be sold through a window, this evening of dance reflect how we are perhaps no better equipped to deal with our own obsession with sexuality, physicality and self acceptance than ever before.

Megill states: “I believe my work is relevant and meaningful as it illuminates the simplicity of humanity and the laughter that unites us all. Dance for me is a means to uncovering the nature of who we are as individuals and where we stand in the world surrounding us. Making dances makes my life more real, and I hope those who see my work feel the same. Meshing entertainment with poignancy, I ache to create work that speaks to our human nature and allows us to see ourselves as we really are and then laugh at our ridiculousness. “

Thank you so much for your consideration of my work. Please contact me if you would like to attend and review our show at this year’s Hollywood Fringe!

Sincerely,
Beth Megill
