Lighting the way through the Hollywood Fringe Festival in June, LOOKING PAST LOSS premieres at Thymele Arts California Room (5481 Santa Monica Blvd. Hollywood, CA 90029), written/performed by Charlotte Galbreath and directed by Debra De Liso. LOOKING PAST LOSS will open on Friday, June 10th at 8:45pm and run through Friday, June 24th at 9:15pm.

In Looking Past Loss, a deeply heartfelt and moving portrayal of the grieving process, recent college graduate Charlotte Galbreath finds comedy within the darkness of loss, leaving the audience to contemplate where the light is in their own grief.

Encouraged by her therapist to journal her way to the light but struggling to articulate her emotions on paper, Charlotte finds the music within herself as an outlet. Drawing on her grandma’s strength during a world war, her mother’s resilience as a stroke survivor, and the unconditional love of a friend lost to suicide, Charlotte guides another relative through her struggle with stage four breast cancer. This 35-minute dramedy explores how the universal crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to reckon with not only the pain that comes along with these grave circumstances but also our other traumas that may be triggered by these events. Weighed down by these adversities, Charlotte is left to consider how her painful memories can offer a fresh perspective on the ways loss can yield a newfound sense of purpose in our lives.

PERFORMER AND DIRECTOR’S BIOS:
CHARLOTTE GALBREATH (Writer/Performer): As a recent graduate from USC’s School of Dramatic Arts, Charlotte Galbreath, an emerging talent in LA, wrote and performs her new autobiographical solo play. Inspired by her struggle with loss, she’s drawn on her musical theater background to compose her own original music, some of which will be featured in Looking Past Loss. With recent theatrical credits in The Laramie Project and The White Plague, directed by Kenneth Sawyer, she has expanded into film and television over the past couple of years as well.

DEBRA DE LISO (Director): Debra De Liso is a critically acclaimed actor, writer, and director. She delights in the development of original solo plays and films with new and seasoned writers. Debra is the recipient of the Rainbow Award from the LA Women’s Theatre Festival for her decades of work in forgotten communities, including artists with disabilities, institutionalized teens, and incarcerated women. She has dramaturged and directed over 700 original solo plays which have garnered several awards in Los Angeles and New York City, as well received plays at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

After writing her master’s thesis The Physicalization of a Role, she received a fellowship to earn her MFA at UCLA where she wrote her first solo play The Nurse June Show about her disabled mother. Debra developed Theatre of Compassion playwriting workshops to build healing bridges by stepping into another person’s life for an evening of theatre. She continues to enjoy teaching theatre classes at AADA and USC for over twenty years. Debra’s theatre into film production company, Walk A Mile Works, elevates original projects for voices that are not always heard. For more info see www.debradeliso.com
