“Wish we could go back- voluntarily. Pick what we wanna re-experience, because I certainly have forgotten some of those conversations, like this one.”

As one of the Hollywood Fringe Festival’s Scholarship Winners for 2022, yellow/blue opened at the California Institute of the Arts on March 10th, (after a year-long delay due to COVID) to rave reviews. Featuring the colors yellow, blue, and green, a story of loss and fading childhood memories encapsulates the stage as (Twin-less) Identical Twin “Yellow Girl” (Justine Gorry) rewinds her brain back to a time where the seriousness of life was hidden and instead joy took reign.

We find “Yellow Girl” in the attic of her childhood home, accompanied by a dusty toy chest and a yellow camcorder set on a tripod ready to replay some mental souvenirs. The memories are “awakened” when “Yellow Girl” holds up an object from her past up to the camcorder. A scene commences with two younger versions of her and her sister “Young Yellow Girl” (Shireen Heidari) and “Young Blue Girl” (Olivia Ross) coming and acting out an experience from her childhood, but there’s one problem: She has forgotten her late twin’s name. Throughout the show, the purposeful choosing of certain memories takes a toll on “Yellow Girl” as unwanted memories start to appear. In order to leave the attic, “Yellow Girl” must come to terms with the traumas and regrets of her past in order to remember her sister’s name.

Based on the playwright/director/designer’s [Jeannette Srinivasan] personal experience of losing her identical twin sister her senior year of high school, Srinivasan wanted to paint a moving picture of what it’s like to not only lose the most important person of your life, but how we choose live life afterwards. What happens when memories of a lost one become nothing more than colors and forgotten objects shifting into forgotten memories.

Reviews:
“yellow/blue takes you on a fascinating journey through the protagonist’s childhood. The play walks on the line of fiction and reality with a perfect balance with its outstanding, nonlinear way of storytelling. This is a play about love, about memory, about family, and about regrets. It made me laugh and it made me cry. At the end of the show, I placed my hand on my heart, amazed by the playwright and their story, and in awe by how the actors embodied the story.”

“I want to congratulate you on a well written play and the professional cast. I like the approach of using the camera for the flashbacks. The actors did an incredible job and as emotional as I got, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am looking forward to seeing it again in Hollywood and best luck to you.”
